Plants of Hula: Na Mea Kanu o Ka Hula

The nonprofit Friends of Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park is offering a field seminar that focuses on cultural and scientific exploration of the plants used in hula. A kuma hula (hula teacher/master) and botanist team up to lead the field seminar “Plants of Hula: Na Mea Kanu o Ke Hula,” in Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park.
Kumu hula Ab Kawainohoikala‘i Valencia will share beliefs about hula plants as kino lau, manifestations of Hawaiian deities in plant form. Tim Tunison, botanist, will share scientific information and insight as participants walk among native species in their natural environment and discuss cultural protocols used when picking plants.
Included is a hands-on lesson in native plant propagation at Tunison’s property in Volcano Village.

Battleship Missouri Memorial
The Battleship Missouri Memorial, located a mere ship’s length from the USS Arizona Memorial, completes a historical visitor experience that begins with the “day of infamy” that saw the sinking of USS Arizona in Pearl Harbor and ends with Imperial Japan’s unconditional surrender aboard USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay. Following an astounding career that spans five decades and three wars, from World War II to the Korean conflict to the Liberation of Kuwait, the “Mighty Mo” was decommissioned and is now a proud tribute to the U.S. Navy, veterans and the historic role the USS Missouri played in World War II.
