Honolulu Museum of Art

Experience world-class art (like Monet and Hokusai), explore courtyards and gardens, enjoy lunch, and shop at two beautiful locations—one near downtown, the other above the city with a view of Diamond Head. Birding Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge

Saturday, September 20, 2014 8:00am – 4:00pm

Wildlife biologist Thane Pratt leads an adventure in search of endangered birds at the Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge. On the slopes of Mauna Kea, the 32,000 acre rainforest is the premier sanctuary for rare and endangered native songbirds and is the best place to find them.

Through the moderate hikes, at 6,500 feet elevation and total about two miles over somewhat steep terrain, learn about the history of Hakalau Forest and the current conservation efforts and see how management activities has led to the recovery of native plants and birds.

Thane Pratt retired in 2009 from a 20 year career as a wildlife biologist where he conducted research investigating why native Hawaiian forest birds are so endangered and what can be done to save them.
