Mariner's Ridge Trail, Oahu
The Mariner’s Ridge Trail, in East Oahu’s Hawaii Kai area, starts at the edge of a residential neighborhood (Kaluanui Road) and climbs to the top of the Koolau Mountains, offering stunning views of nearby Makapuu Point and its lighthouse as well as Waimanalo Bay and Windward landmarks such as Mount Olomana and Lanikai’s Mokulua Islands. The hike to the summit isn’t long—about 1.5 miles. It is steep in a few spots, but the difficulty level is generally rated as “beginner.” Mariner’s Ridge (also known as Kaluanui Ridge) is located near Oahu’s southeastern tip. The first stretch of the trail is rocky and can be a bit dusty. After gaining a bit of elevation, though, the terrain is dotted with pines and ironwood trees. On the way to the summit, there are views of nearby Koko Head Crater.
