Kealii is known both here on his home island and around the world for his work as a singer/guitarist, and as a kumu hula with his acclaimed Halau Kealaokamaile. A unique program to support the halau as they prepare for the Merrie Monarch competition. Hoonanea festivities—arts/crafts and live entertainment start at 5:30 p.m. Pre-show food and beverages available in the courtyard.

Schaefer Portrait Challenge 2009 Maui Arts & Cultural Center’s signature triennial: a prestigious statewide juried exhibition that has become a showcase of outstanding Hawaii artists and a chronicle of the changing face of our community. The selected explorations in portraiture include a broad range of interpretation and styles—from representational to experimental in drawing, painting and sculpture—all of which reveal the rewards of observation and the essence of human connection. "Mainland Education" Cultures mix, match and clash at the University of Kansas in the early 1980s. Jerome, a second-year graduate student, is a third-generation Japanese-American from Hawaii. His roommate Yan is Taiwanese and still struggling comically with the English language. They meet the outgoing and assertive Cathy, born and raised in the Midwest, and her roommate Rei, a Japanese national who speaks English well but with an accent.
