“The Industrial Revolution on Kauai: Steam Power and Other Innovations” Exhibit Dramatic socio-economic changes all around the world in the 19th century began with the development and use of the steam engine. Hawaii, a small dot in the Pacific, became not only one of the major users of steam power, but innovators in the use of this power source. The story is told through historic photographs, biographies, and static and living displays in this collaborative effort by Grove Farm Homestead Museum and Kauai Museum. Grove Farm Homestead Museum has the largest collection of operating steam train engines in the world. Both museum’s collections will be on display at the Kauai Museum with activities planned at Grove Farm Homestead’s train tracks, roundhouse and grounds.
“Russian Fort—Paulaula: Myths, Legends and Truths” Exhibit Declared a national monument in 1928 due to it being a major Russian fortification in Hawaii, the site is a tangible testament to the resourcefulness of Kauai’s last king during the terrifying years of the early 19th century as western influences played a pivotal role in shaping Hawaiian politics and warfare. The site, named Paulaula, was originally a compound of the alii and site of a heiau that Captain James Cook first noted when he anchored in Waimea Bay on Jan. 20, 1778. Following its brief beginnings as a Russian fortification, it was completed by Kaumualii and served as a Hawaiian garrison complete with western weaponry for some 30 years following the death of Kamehameha I in 1819.
