Details
Declared a national monument in 1928 due to it being a major Russian fortification in Hawaii, the site is a tangible testament to the resourcefulness of Kauai’s last king during the terrifying years of the early 19th century as western influences played a pivotal role in shaping Hawaiian politics and warfare. The site, named Paulaula, was originally a compound of the alii and site of a heiau that Captain James Cook first noted when he anchored in Waimea Bay on Jan. 20, 1778. Following its brief beginnings as a Russian fortification, it was completed by Kaumualii and served as a Hawaiian garrison complete with western weaponry for some 30 years following the death of Kamehameha I in 1819.
