Phi•lan•thro•py: What it is

The desire to promote the welfare of others, expressed especially by the generous donation of money to good causes.

Good people supporting good causes and doing good in the community. That’s what philanthropy is all about, and it’s been part of the Hawaii culture for generations.

The word philanthropist often conjures images of Rockefeller, Carnegie, Gates or Omidyar—people of deep means who invest heavily in the causes they’re passionate about. But it’s more than that, and it’s each of us.

Look behind the scenes at members of our community who are making a difference, those whose daily jobs make it happen, those whose compassion makes it a reality and the foundations that are trying to keep it all going for generations.
