Diamond Head trail to close
Diamond Head State Monument Summit Trail is a popular tourist attraction on Oahu’s south shore. The 0.75-mile hike leads to the crater’s rim where you can overlook Waikiki.
It will be closing for a month, starting next week Monday (10/20) to November 20, for slope maintenance.
During its closure, you cannot hike the trail. However, for most of the month, the park inside the crater, including the parking lot, adjacent fields, restrooms and information booth, will remain open to the public.
Actually, there’ll be no renovation to the crater itself, but rather much-needed maintenance to its slope to eliminate potential rockfall hazards. Trail and stairway improvements will be made at a later date.
The Kahala Tunnel (the only entrance into the monument) will close Nov. 13-20 for rock-scaling work as well.
When it reopens, we’ll let you know on HawaiiMagazine.com.
UPDATE, 11/21/08: The Diamond Head Trail reopens today.
